Esther Yoon Chung is a distinguished harpist recognized for her versatile artistry and exceptional musical achievements. With a career spanning both performance and education, she has established herself as a dedicated performer and passionate educator in the classical music world.
Esther served as a substitute harpist for numerous prestigious orchestras, including the Seoul Festa Philharmonic (2023), Hankyung Arte Philharmonic (2022–2023), Korea National Opera (2022), Bucheon City Arts Group (2021), and an ongoing involvement with the Korean National Symphony Orchestra since 2017.
A dedicated chamber musician, Esther is a founding member of "The Harp," an ensemble that has garnered attention for its innovative performances and collaborations since 2014. She has also participated in numerous solo and concerto performances at renowned venues such as the Seoul Arts Center, Kumho Art Hall, and Youngsan Grace Hall, captivating audiences with her expressive technique and delicate expression.
Esther has been recognized through numerous awards, including 1st prize at the Music Association of Korea Competition (2022) and the Lillian Fuchs Chamber Music Competition (2021), and the Korean Chamber Orchestra Competition (2013). Also, she has won Kumho Young Artist Competition (2013) with an unanimous decision.
Esther’s educational journey reflects her commitment to both artistic and intellectual growth. She has completed a degree in Orchestral Performance at the Manhattan School of Music, where she is a full scholarship awardee. Prior to this, she earned a Graduate Performance Diploma and Master of Music from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, where she was honored with the Excellence in Music Leadership Fellowship. She began her formal music training at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, where she received her Bachelor of Music degree.
An experienced teacher, Esther has served as an assistant instructor at the Peabody Preparatory School and has taught master classes in both the U.S. and Korea. She is dedicated to passing on her knowledge and passion for the harp to the next generation of musicians. Her private instruction includes studies with notable harpists such as Mariko Anraku, Associate Principal Harp of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and Ruth Inglefield, former faculty at Peabody.
Esther’s artistry, combined with her teaching experience and ongoing performance career, establishes her as a leading figure in the harp community, continually pushing the boundaries of what the harp can express in both solo and ensemble settings.
